Twice in a Lifetime

For those of us old enough to remember, there was a time when Apple forced us all to have a U2 album on our phones/ipods that we didn’t want or ask for. It was also notoriously hard to remove from your phone. Some people say it is still on their phone to this day…

I never thought I’d be forced to listen to U2 again in my life, but… It happened. We will get there though. Let’s start at the beginning. To Naoshima Island we go…

Fuji as seen from the Shinkansen window.

So after the last days of Sakura searching we had a side trip planned to go to Naoshima Island, which is an island of the coast of Japan that has a bunch of art installations and Museums. A bunch of famous architects and artists have stuff there. Naturally, Nikki really wanted to go. So we hopped on the Shinkansen (bullet train) for a 4 hour ride to our destination. Uno Port. We stayed at a small hotel right next to the port run by a Japanese dude named Max who spent time living in NYC.

After arriving with we spent the night there and just relaxed. The next morning, we walked literally across the street and hopped on the ferry for a quick 20min ride to the island. What we didn’t anticipate was the rain. It rained all day. Like… all day. It was fine thought. Most of the activities were indoors. There was a lot of walking in between them though.

Umbrellas and raincoats

Between Museums and beautiful views from the island, we just walked the islands narrow streets and remarked at the nature and wildlife in the area. It really is a beautiful place. However at the end of the day things took an unexpected turn when I was walking ahead of Nikki in the Hiroshi Sugimoto “Time Corridors” Museum. One of the only museums that requires reservations. Also a Museum in Japan so…It’s dead quiet. As I walk into the room I look up at a man standing about 3 feet from me directly in the doorway in my line of sight and to my surprise it was fucking Bono from U2.

I immediately turned around and went to tell Nikki. He was there with like 3 people and a couple Japanese dude in suits. They were his handlers from what I could tell. Now me, I don’t bother famous people when I see them so I just kept on going about my day enjoying the museum. Me and Nikki made our way into a room where you were given tea and a Japanese sweet. That room is next to to a room in the museum with this artwork on the wall.

And that’s when it happened. Bono must’ve entered this room. Because in the middle of our tea, out of nowhere, this mutherfucker Bono just starts singing “Amazing Grace” loud as fuck inside the museum. I was dyiiiiiiiiiinnnnnggggggg laughing, but had to hold it in kind of. Like dude you’re in a museum with other guests. I don’t care who you are, be quiet lol. Luckily for my readers, you get to hear it to, as Nikki was clutch wit it and recorded some of the audio.

I don’t know, but to me this was just a hilarious chain of events. It really made me feel like that one episode of South Park with bono in it hit the nail on the head. In case you haven’t figured it out, the blogs main photo is a sneaky screenshot of a video Nikki took of bono for proof of this hilarity.

Beyond that, we left the island, had dinner, slept, and now we are currently on the bullet train on the way back to Tokyo as I type this. I’m already dreading the end of our vacation and we still have like 8 days left. Time moves too fast… but I digress. Below are some photos from our excursion to the island. See you next blog. Love ya!
